FUNCTIONING OF DERIVATIVE SYNONYMS IN TEXTS

Jolanta Vaskelienė

Derivative synonyms are the kind of synonyms which have the same root, different derivational affixes and very similar or identical lexical meaning. The rows of derivative synonyms are not static. They can be formed for the following reason – the derivational neologism or the semantic neologism is used (the new lexical meaning of the derivative allows to include it into the synonym row). The books (texts) of literary critics and the material from the Computerized Corpus of Vytautas Magnus University were researched. The 20 new rows of synonyms were discussed in this article. The most part of neologisms are derived according to the word - building rules. Derivatives have the suffixes - tis, - smas and the inflexion - a is very often. The majority of neologisms are the part of expressive vocabulary; some of them can turn into terms ( prarastis, sutelktis, atošauka, įveika). 12 derivatives are fixed in the Computerized Corpus of Vytautas Magnus University. Some of them are used often enough ( kartotė – on 14, sutelktis – on 17, konkretybė – on 38, prarastis – on 46, nyksmas – on 52, įveika – on 111 occasions). Some of these neologisms can become the part of the active vocabulary, can be fixed in dictionaries and the new systemic derivative rows can be formed.
