The antecedent of Philosophy Department of Siauliai University was the Department of Marxism-Leninism of Siauliai Teachers Institute, which was established in February, 1949 ( In 1954 Siauliai Teachers Institute was reorganized to Siauliai Pedagogical Institute). The Department of Marxism-Leninism existed till 1981. The department was managed by: P.Maslianskaja (1949-1950), E.Murauskienė (1950-1951). G.Malyševas (1951-1956), V.Germanas (1956-1959), J.Aničas (1960-1969), J.Ažubalis (1969-1980), A.Sabaliauskas (1980-1981). However in this period were developed very important topics for future development of the department: Philosophical anthropology, Synergetics, Applied Philosophy in the sphere of social sciences, Pedagogical philosophy. 

1981-1999 was the period of radical reorganization of the content and methods, aims and sense of work of department and as a consequence - the change of the title.

In Siauliai Pedagogical Institute from 1989 till 1992 existed the department of Philosophy and politics. Since 1992 - recalled the Department of Philosophy. The department was managed by: A.Sabaliauskas (1981-1992), K.Šerpetis (1992-1996).

Ordinary reorganization of department occure in January 1997: historians were engaged and the Department was recalled of Philosophy and History. The head of department was elected doc. A.Sabaliauskas (1997-1999). For this period the problems of transitional society were the most important.

The lack of lecturers and professors was the main problem which led department all these periods. That problem was tackled in different ways: 1) Leaving and employing talented graduate students in department, like: N. Judina, S. Kamblevičienė, L. Dromatienė, V. Šimkuvienė, A. Kaminskienė - Gumuliauskienė. 2) Inviting the faculty of Philosophy graduate students from Moscow and Leningrad work in department, that is: A. Skalandienė, K. Šerpetis, V. Trimailovas, G. Vyšniauskas, A. Kalvaitis, D. Staponkutė, A. Kuznecovas, J. Kuznecovienė, V. Buchcerytė, G. Jankauskas, N. Mažeikienė ir G. Mažeikis.

In  February 1999, the department was reorganized in two independed departments - The Department of Philosophy and the Department of History. Since that date the head of Department of Philosophy is prof. G. Mazeikis. At that time the department had 15 lecturers. Doctors and docents - G. Mažeikis, A. Sabaliauskas, L. Dromantienė, R. Jasiulevičienė, K. Šerpetis, senior assistants: S.Šimaitis, K.Vaineikis, and assistance: I.Balčiūnienė, J.Dieliautas, A. Gedutis (VU phd student), N. Mažeikienė (ŠU phd student), D.Margauskaitė, J. Mackevičiūtė (VU phd student), A.Skalandienė, V.Trimailovas. The manager of Department affairs  - D. Rimkevičienė.

Since September 2000, was established new study programme Philosophy and Public Science, in the Faculty of Humanities. That was a new step for Philosophy department grow and development opportunities. In 2001 were accepted extramural students of Philosophy and Public Science programme.

In 2002 was established Art education and religion study programme.

In 2004 was confirmed Intercultural Education and Mediation study programme for Master student. Which is orientated in multiculturalism studies including philosophy, education, anthropology, lingvistic approaches.

In 2006 the BA study programme of Philosophy and Civic education was confirmed and first student begin studies in 2007.

In 2007 the MA study programme Cultural studies was confirmed.

The department of Philosophy actively cooperates with the Centre of Cultural Anthropology. Department is representing some educational and scientific directions of activities:

  1. Philosophy. The philosophy of XX th century is dominating. That is, because students of Philosophy and Public Science have no skills of classic ancient languages, and the studies of history of philosophy have educational format, not scientific research. The interests of department are connected with modern anthropology of philosophy, synergy, analytic and post analytic philosophy.
  2. Political Science. Politics sphere is educational one. Classical and modern political theories are developed, also international relations, Studies of Europen Union are preponderant. In 2006 were developed public political studies and citizenship education.
  3. Ethics.
  4. Sociocultural anthropology. Students of Philosophy and Public Science programme are thought social, political and philosophical anthropology, political sociology and are engaged in anthropology field researches.
  5. Theology studies.

There are employed 30 lecturers at the department of Philosophy: Prof. dr. G. Mažeikis, prof. dr. K. Trimakas, doc. dr. A. Gedutis, doc. dr. N. Mažeikienė, doc. dr. A. Sabaliauskas, doc. dr. S. Šimaitis, doc. dr. K. Šerpetis , lecturer dr. J. Mackevičiūtė, lecturer S.Jastrumskytė, lecturer V. Kinčinaitis, lecturer J. Nekrašius, dr. - I. Balčiūnienė, phd students: J. Dieliautas, D. Klodienė, J. Lavrinec, kun. S. Matulis, I. Ratnikaitė , D. Vandzinskaitė, E. Virgailaitė - Mečkauskaitė , A. Jurevičiūtė, D. Šlekys, asistance - P. Bielskienė, kun. A. Dauknys, G. Pavalkis, V. The department actively participates in the projects of international cooperation:

  • 1997-1998 m. participated in SOCRATES/ERASMUS intercnational multicultural project DEMETRA.
  • 2000-2001 m. participated in SOCRATES/ERASMUS CDA C.A.N.E. project: Common Development of Curriculum. Cultural Avareness in Europe. (European Master or Art).
  • Socrates/Erasmus students and teachers mobility (58402-IC-1-2002-1-LT-ERASMUS-EUC-1);
  • 2005 - 2008  European Union Structural funds project  BPD 2.4 "BIBLIONOVA"
  • 2006 - 2008 European Union Structural funds project  BPD 2.4 " KOOPERIA"
  • 2006-2008  European Union Structural funds project  BPD 2.5. "ARIADNE"
  • 2006 - 2008 European Union Structural funds project  BPD 2.5. "MOKOM"
The representatives of the department develop Service learning method, Web bases learning methods, researches in sphere of symbolical thinking, creative industries, propaganda and persuasion, alternative civic education and alternative civic projects, projects activity and other.
